The Power of Anti-Visualization

A useful tool to motivate yourself is to picture in your mind exactly what you DON’T want to happen. If you are not making progress in a certain area of your life, take a few minutes and fast-forward five years using your mind’s eye. Five years from now… construct a detailed image in your mind, pretend you are really there, now. How old are you, and what year it is? Now cast your mind’s eye onto the situation in question and observe that it’s exactly the same. No change whatsoever — status quo. Treading water.

When done correctly this should generate a near-panic response within your brain. Stay in the exercise for as long as you can, to really let the feeling sink in. Five years, no progress. Five years of a static situation. Five years and NOTHING has been done. All your friends and family are observing this, thinking “What is the deal, I thought X was supposed to be happening? How sad, I guess they didn’t have what it takes.”

When you resurface and realize that there is still time to avoid this horrible situation, it will be like Scrooge waking up on Christmas morning. You will be overflowing with energy and drive to take action!
